/files/Staff Header Pictures/Mrs-Ferguson.jpgWelcome to Second Grade...

a year of challenges, adventures, growth, and learning.

My goal this year is to help my 8 students master second grade concepts, principles, and skills so that in the spring they will be ready for third grade.  A second top priority is to help them understand that He Reigns, our school theme for this year.

Let me introduce you to the subject matter my students and I will be working on.

An Overview of Second Grade CurriculumOur Bible classes are based on the curriculum that LCA teachers have developed over the past two years.  It is a study of God's Word that is chronological and consistent throughout the elementary grades.

1st Unit - Old Testament
2nd Unit - New Testament

3rd Unit - Doctrine (Second-graders focus on the
attributes of God and the concept of the Trinity.)
4th Unit - Discipleship/Christian Living

Second grade is the year in which cursive handwriting is introduced.  We will review the PreCursive alphabet that is taught in LCA's kindergarten program and will learn to form letters in cursive.

Our science lessons help us appreciate how God has created our bodies, the animal kingdom, and plants.  Time is also spent learning more about our planet Earth with its oceans and continents, the air around us and weather, and movement and force.  There may be an opportunity for us to take a science field trip during the year.

Social studies class is a study of our country from small communities to large states.  We will also focus on American history from colonial days to the days of great immigration and the contributions new Americans gave to our country. A field trip or two will help to enhance our studies in this area as well.

In English this year the students will work hard on capitalization, punctuation, and parts of speech in order to do a variety of writing assignments.  The goal is for them to become good writers by learning and applying the steps of the writing process.  Each child will end the year with a portfolio of his/her original work.

Memorization of addition and subtraction facts is an important part of our math program.  Knowing facts helps as we add and subtract two- and three-place numbers.  Our study also includes fractions, money, time, measurement, multiplication, and division readiness.

Of course, we will continue to work on improving our reading and spelling skills by putting into practice the phonics rules we have learned.  Our reading book is a wonderful collection of stories, articles, plays, and poems on a variety of subjects.  We will focus on silent reading for comprehension and oral reading for fluency and appropriate expression.
